Did you know that companies like the South Korean tech Giant Samsung, Intel, and Qualcomm began testing this 802.11ad new protocol and now the Wi-Fi Alliance also announced it officially? Let’s get to know the new protocol 802.11ad, better known as WiGig that allows downloading at 8Gbps.
WiGig Is Finally Here With Insane Download Speeds Of Up To 8Gbps
In 2015 some companies like the South Korean tech Giant Samsung, Intel and Qualcomm began testing this 802.11ad new protocol and now the Wi-Fi Alliance also announced it officially. Let’s get to know the new protocol 802.11ad, better known as WiGig that allows downloading at 8Gbps.
The home routers typically operate in the band of 2.4GHz and 5Ghz ensuring good coverage and penetration of the signal even in areas with many “obstacles”. However, with the 802.11ac standard (1 wave) can only communicate at the speeds of 1.3 Gbps.
Currently, there are already some certified devices available with the “version 2”, the 802.11ac that ensures communication speeds up to 6.8 Gbps and other improvements compared to version 1 (802.11ac – wave 1).
WiGig (802.11ad)-Large Downloads In Seconds
WiGig allows communication in “multi-gigabit”, high throughput in wireless networks is one of the main objectives in the new protocol 802.11ad. Due to the use of wider channels in 60GHz, WiGig supports faster data transfer with low latency.
In addition, this new standard will ensure download speed of around 8Gbps, which means you can download a video in a few seconds or even play a video on Blu-ray via the wireless network to the TV without any latency.
“WiGig uses wider channels in 60 GHz to transmit data efficiently at multi-gigabit per second speeds and with low latency at distances of up to ten meters. WiGig devices use beamforming to focus the directed signal between devices, to Eliminate interference from nearby devices and to enable high performance even in dense 60 GHz environments. Wider channels enable WiGig devices to Achieve data rates of up to 8 Gbps, Allowing users to download an HD movie in a few seconds. This level of performance is critical to delivering the wired-grade experience for a variety of in-room and outdoor line-of-sight scenarios”.
Besides the possibility of communication super-fast speed, the WiGig is also efficient in the energy field, which is always a very interesting aspect when we consider, for example, mobile devices.
The major disadvantage of this technology is that it is only specified for short distances (about 10 meters). This new technology is expected to become mainstream next year as the routers and devices will most likely add support for WiGig.
