What is a Filter?

Snapchat allows you to add effects both before and after the snap. The after-the-snap effects are called filters. You don’t have to go through a set of complicated steps to apply them.

Prerequisites

You have to make sure a few things before you proceed to applying filters.

Install the Latest Update

Snapchat wants us to be updated always. If you want to have a lot of filters, you should install the latest version of it. In case you don’t want the update, chances are some filters won’t work.

Access Play Store or iTunes store to upgrade the version to the latest.

Enable Filters

I have seen some users complaining about the filter feature of Snapchat simply because the same on their device wasn’t turned on. So whatever you try, it will become impossible for you to apply filters with turned off state.

Follow the steps given below to enable filters.

Step 1: Pick your phone up and install the Snapchat app if you haven’t yet. Just open your app store and search for Snapchat. There you go! Press the Install button right away.

Step 2: After the usual procedures required for sign up, you will see a screen like the one below.

                         

Press on the ghost button on top from the main screen.

Step 3: Now you can see a few options like Added Me, Add Friends, and My Friends. But we don’t need to use any of them. Look at the gear button given on the top-right portion of the screen. Don’t hesitate to tap on it.

Step 4: From a list of settings follow, choose Manage and switch Filters to on mode.

Enable Location

Snapchat has some location-based services which you don’t get without turning the location on. I have included the methods to activate location on both Android and iPhone below.

Android

Step 1: First, take your phone and access Settings. You can do it either from the notification panel or the list of apps.

Step 2: Scroll down to the bottom to see Location under Personal. It is possible to toggle the slider there. Or, you can open the menu and turn on the service from inside.

Note:- Alternatively, you can turn on GPS or location service by dragging down from the notification area.

iOS

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Scroll down to see Privacy and tap on the same to open it.

Step 3: You have to access Location services from the screen that follows privacy panel.

Step 4: Switch the Location Services On there.

That’s it. Now we can move on to knowing how to use visual filters on Snapchat.

How to Use Filters on Snapchat?

Follow the steps given below to use Snapchat filters.

Step 1: Open the app and what you see is the camera screen of Snapchat. We are going to capture a photo or a 10 seconds video.

Step 2: As we are going to capture the media, tap on the white circle at the bottom. It will take a snap. In case you want to record a video, simply holding the same button does the trick.

Step 3: Once you capture a video or take a snap, applying filters becomes easy. Swipe to left or right for seeing them in action.

The following are the filters you can see on Snapchat.

Geo Filters:- You get different geo filters based on the region you are currently in. They are of three classes; city-based, community-based, and on-demand.

Video Only Filters:- As read from the name itself, this type of filters can only be used with videos. Rewind, fast-forward, faster fast forward and slow motion are the items here.

Data Filter:- The third type of filters adds some real data like battery life, temperature, time, date, and speed.

Color Filter:- You experience change in colors of the original media after applying color filters. They are black& white, bright, sepia and vintage.

How to Use More than One Filter on Snapchat?

First, swipe to left or right and press and hold the photo. It will add the first filter and, you need to swipe with another finger without releasing the first.

A picture can withstand a maximum of 3 filters whereas for video, you can apply five.

Note:- I have described how to use cool filters on Snapchat only. But you can apply stickers, texts, face swaps and other effects as well. Along with the free filters, the paid ones are also available that make your snaps flamboyant.
